The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® Method is a training method developed by Juliu Horvath that offers similar benefits also derived from dance, swimming, yoga, and tai chi. A trainer guides you through a series of exercises made up of spiraling and circular movements, progressing smoothly from one movement to the next. These full body exercises are often repeated in a rhythmic, synchronized pattern, while focusing on fluidity of motion and coordinating breath with movement. As a result, many find that sessions are both calming to the mind and energizing to the body.
The movements used in a session are based on the natural movements of the spine, making this a beneficial training method for all ages and abilities. Sessions are low impact, and focus on strengthening and lengthening muscles, creating space in the body’s joints, aligning the spine and skeletal system, and increasing flexibility, coordination, and range of motion.
Unlike many traditional fitness methods, GYROTONIC® exercises move joints through their natural range of motion and are adaptable to individual needs and capabilities. This minimizes any pain or jarring sensations during the workout, even if you are recovering from illness or injury. In fact, many people are introduced to GYROTONIC® exercise as a potential solution for recovery after injury, as it is often an extremely effective tool for rehabilitation, maintenance, and injury prevention. Even Horvath, the founder of the method, created the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® Method to heal from a series of injuries incurred during his years as a professional dancer.
There are two methods within the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® Method: GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® exercise.
GYROTONIC® sessions are often taught one-on-one or in a very small group using specialized machines created for the body’s natural pathways. The equipment is adjustable for a person’s unique form and abilities and provides consistent and even resistance during exercises. GYROTONIC® machines are unique, and beautifully crafted and designed to strengthen the body in a gentle manner.
In a GYROKINESIS® session trainers teach a group without machines. Instead, you’ll use a mat and stool as your trainer guides the group through the circular, waving, spiraling and undulating movements. Classes generally begin on the stool, then move to the floor, and end with standing exercises. The class begins with a gentle awakening of the body, and exercises become more vibrant as the class continues. To end the class you’ll move through a series of movements that allow the body to unwind before you return to your day.
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® Method can help you get moving, minimize or eliminate pain, prevent or rehabilitate injuries, and achieve your fitness and movement goals, whatever they may be.
